Tigers Triumph
Over 200,000 qualification games and 8,500 registrants over 3 weeks have brought us to the 2008 Pontiac Virtual NCAA Final 4's Championship game where the tournament's #1 seed RFULLER618, playing as Kansas, took on the #5 seeded NJ GR8ST and the Memphis Tigers. It was fast and furious from the tip as Memphis took off, building an 8 point lead on 85% shooting from the field, working the pick and roll to perfection. But Kansas battled back, grabbing key steals and working the low post, to cut the lead to 2. But in the end, Memphis was too strong for the potent Jayhawk attack, shutting down KU's shooters on their way to a 34-27 victory, and their first Pontiac Virtual NCAA Final 4 Championship. Congratulations to NJ GR8ST!
Jayhawks Soar
Live from the Pontiac Garage at the NCAA Final 4, the Kansas Jayhawks cruised in their semi-final match up, beating the North Carolina Tarheels 39-25. rfuller618 guided the Jayhawks to victory, outlasting JRUE FROM 713 and moving on to the finals. In a fast-paced game, Kansas used a run-and-gun attack to beat the Heels, scoring 14 of their points on the fast break. Rfuller618 will now play the winner of UCLA vs. Memphis for a chance to become the 2008 Pontiac Virtual NCAA Final 4 Champion. (04.05.08 1400CST)
Tigers Take Down Bruins
In the Pontiac Virtual NCAA Final 4's second semi-final, the Memphis Tigers out-muscled the UCLA Bruins, winning a low-scoring affair, 32-20. Shooting a lights-out 62% from the field, NJ GR8ST used a lethal 3-point attack to defeat UNCfan23, and he'll move on to play rfuller618 in the virtual finals. NJ GR8ST went 5/7 from beyond the arc, and held UNCfan23 to just 42% shooting from the field. After a close start, Memphis owned the second half, holding the usually hot-handed Bruins to just 2/7 from the three-point line. NJ GR8ST will now move on to the Virtual event's final round, where he'll battle Rfuller618 to be crowned the 2008 Virtual Champion. (04.05.08 1400CST)
Elite 8 Update With Greg Gumbel
Check out the Virtual Tournament Elite 8 action from the desk of Greg Gumbel.
Jayhawks Dance
Rock Chalk, Jayhawk - Kansas is on their way to their first Virtual Final 4 after concluding Davidson's Cinderella story, 72 - 50 on Saturday. Widely regarded as the tournament's deepest team, all 5 KU starters scored in double digits, with the Jayhawk bench contributing big baskets to push the Midwest #1 seed's lead to 19 at the break. It was more of the same in the second half, as the active Kansas attack scored on acrobatic fastbreak buckets, and deep shots from downtown, while the few errant KU shots were quickly cleaned up by their steady front court, out-rebounding Davidson by 10. The Jayhawks will look to continue their dominant run in San Antonio next Saturday, making their 13th Final 4 appearance. (03.29.08 2000CST)
Mighty Memphis
The Memphis Tigers will represent the South Region in this year's Virtual Final 4, halting a dynamic Texas attack, 60 - 51. The South Final lived up to the 1 versus 2 billing as both played solid basketball during the first twenty minutes, deadlocked at 32 at the half thanks to balanced displays on both ends of the court. The Longhorns started the second with the hot hand, hitting on their first 6 attempts while forcing 4 Tiger turnovers. However, Texas' streak would quickly fade as the Tigers turned it around thanks to some clutch, contested shooting, dropping 5 of 6 attempts from beyond the arc, and an energetic exclamation point slam to cap a 15-2 run. Memphis moves on to their first Virtual Final 4. (03.29.08 2000CST)
Tarheels Take Down Cardinals
No surprises in the East Region as the UNC Tarheels continued their dominant Tournament performance, beating Louisville, 62-58. The ACC Champs, winners of 15 straight, simply could not be stopped despite strong shooting from the Cardinals who hit better than 59% from the floor. UNC's powerful offense was running on all cylinders as they worked the lead to 6 at the break, but that hot Cardinal touch from long range kept the game close into the second half. A stifling Tarheel defense applied the necessary pressure in the game's closing moments, choking off Louisville's upset bid. UNC will be making its first trip to the Final 4 since their 2005 Championship season. (03.29.08 2000CST)
Bruins Win The West
The UCLA Bruins will make their third-straight Virtual Final 4 appearance, besting the third-seeded Musketeers, 65- 43. The Bruins' up-tempo attack kept Xavier off-balanced all game, running the floor with aggressive fast-breaks, while getting steady low-post play from their young big man in the paint. The West's #1 seed never trailed past the game's thirty-five second mark, tallying leads as big as 28 points throughout the contest. UCLA will look to repeat their 2006 performance as Pontiac Virtual Champions, making their 18th Final Four appearance next weekend in San Antonio. (03.29.08 2000CST)
Davidson's Dream Dies
The Davidson Wildcats got a tremendous performance from their star point-guard, but it wasn't enough to propel the Wildcats past Wisconsin and into the Elite 8, as they fell 70-62. The Davidson sophomore standout poured in 34 points, connecting on 8-9 from behind the arc, but the Big Ten Champion Badgers countered with a balanced attack to end Davidson's run. The #3 seed methodically broke down the Davidson defense, winning the game with stalwart fundamentals, and focused execution. Wisconsin, winners of 13 straight games, will move on to the Midwest's finale, where they'll play for their first trip to the Final Four since 2000. (03.26.08 1200CST)
North Carolina Cruises
The University of North Carolina made winning look easy in their previous two NCAA tournament games, and their sweet 16 match-up with Washington State was no different, as they cruised past the Huskies 60-49. The ACC Champions could do no wrong, as they scored the first 12 points of the game, and led by 17 at the half. The Tarheels got great effort from their All-American big man, who recorded his second double-double of the tournament. Looking every bit the number 1 seed, UNC was able to limit their turnovers and shoot a high percentage from the field, as they moved 1 step closer to a Final 4 appearance in San Antonio. (03.26.08 1200CST)
West Virginia Topples Xavier
Coming into this year's tournament, many people believed that Georgetown would be the Big East team with the best shot at a National Championship. Instead, the Hoyas were eliminated in round 2, and it's the West Virginia Mountaineers moving on to the Elite 8. Continuing its string of outstanding performances over the past two weeks, the Mountaineers nailed their first ten shots and went on to roll past the #3 seed, Xavier Musketeers, 60-49. WVU hit an impressive 74% of their 3-point attempts, while the Musketeers managed to connect on just 36% of their open shots from the floor. The Mountaineers will look to maintain their momentum as they move on to the West Region final. (03.25.08 2330CST)
Bruins Top Western Kentucky
The West Region's #1 seed moved one step closer to a repeat Final 4 berth, ending Western Kentucky's underdog run, 65-44. In a game that played out in typical 1 vs 12 action, the Bruins dominated the Hilltoppers in every statistical category, while holding their top scorer to just 7 points on 2 of 12 shooting. UCLA, meanwhile, found their stroke early, rattling off 11 straight as part of a 17-2 run midway through the first half. The Bruins maintained their lead in the 2nd, boxing out the boards, and out-rebounding Western Kentucky by 10 while forcing 12 turnovers. The 2006 Virtual Champs move on to the Elite 8. (03.25.08 2330CST)
Stanford Stuns Texas
Stanford cruised past Texas in their sweet 16 match-up, ending the Longhorns Championship dreams. The Cardinal got dominant post play from their big men, as they owned the glass and challenged every Longhorn shot. High-flying dunks were had throughout as Texas struggled to stop Stanford's powerful front court, who helped prove their team as one of the top 8 in the country. The Pac-10 runners-up continue on their path towards a UCLA rematch, and a shot at their first Virtual Championship. (03.24.08 2000CST)
Spartans Slay Memphis
Sweet 16 action saw the Virtual Tournament's first number 1 seed fall, as Memphis exited the South bracket early. In a hard-fought game, Michigan State proved to be too much for the Tigers to handle, winning the battle 61-59. Free throws proved to be the difference in the game, as the Tigers couldn't find their stroke at the line, shooting a dismal 54%. The Spartans, meanwhile, capitalized on their opportunities, shooting 85% from the charity stripe and a solid 10 for 12 from the outside. Memphis had a chance to win at the buzzer, but a late three-point shot fell short, giving the Spartans the upset win. (03.24.08 2000CST)
Cardinals Upset Tennessee
Many thought the Tennessee Volunteers worthy of a #1 seed in this year's tournament, but instead the East's #2 seed won't see the round of 8, as they were eliminated by Louisville 63-53. The Cardinals overcame a 10 point first half deficit to beat the Vols, shooting a sensational 68% in the second half. Tennessee, meanwhile, couldn't duplicate their first half success, as they came out flat and turned the ball over on each of their first 5 possessions. Louisville seized the momentum and never looked back, pulling the upset victory and propelling themselves into the East's championship game. (03.24.08 2000CST)
Jayhawks Roll
KU's big season continues as the Jayhawks easily dismissed Villanova in the Midwest semi-final, 65-47. The 12th seeded Wildcats came out hot at the tip, scoring big shots from long range, sparking a 7-0 opening run. But the Cinderella story quickly faded as Kansas answered with their own barrage of baskets, building an 18-point lead at the break. The second half was more of the same as the Jayhawks fired early and often, draining four straight threes in a stretch, capping a 14-0 run with an acrobatic fastbreak jam. With the win, Kansas returns to their second straight Elite 8. (03.24.08 2000CST)
Virtual Tournament Update With Greg Gumbel
Catch up on the Virtual Tournament as Greg Gumbel highlights the action from rounds one and two.
Villanova Eliminates Siena
The Midwest's underdogs faced-off in the Virtual Tournament's second round, as the 12th seeded Villanova Wildcats defeated the 13th seeded Siena Saints, 69-52. Both Siena and Villanova pulled off upsets in the first round, but only the Wildcats will keep dancing, as they used an aggressive defense to stifle the Saints offensive attack. Villanova forced 9 turnovers in the game, and controlled the glass, out-rebounding Sienna by 7. The 12th seeded Wildcats now move on to the Midwest semi-final game, where they'll need another upset victory to move on. (03.23.08 1830CST)
Wisconsin Badgers K-State
The Big Ten's regular season champs ended Kansas State's first tournament appearance since 1996, edging out the Wildcats, 59-58. While neither flashy, nor spectacular, the Badgers' solid fundamentals and lock-down defense kept the game in their control as the clock wound down. Forcing just 5 K-State turnovers all game, the Midwest's #3 seed made each one of them count, cashing in 13 points, including the game winner off an errant Wildcats inbound pass. With the victory, Wisconsin overcomes its previous two disappointing Tournament trips, looking to make a return to the Final 4 for the first time since 2000. (03.23.08 1330CST)
Cardinal Continues
The Pac-10's "other" title contender continued its run towards a rematch with their rival Bruins by besting the 6th seeded Golden Eagles 71-61 in round two of the Virtual Tournament. The Cardinal twins dominated the inside all game, racking up points in the paint and cleaning the glass on both ends of the floor. A steady diet of unselfish basketball saw Stanford dish out 16 team assists, leading to wide open looks from the floor and a 57% shooting percentage. Marquette cut the lead to 3 with a minute left, but an opportune steal and fastbreak flourish pushed the Cardinal ahead for good, and on to the Sweet 16. (03.23.08 1330CST)
Jayhawks Triumph
UNLV looked dominant in their first round victory over Kent State, but the Midwest's number one seed had no problem disposing of the Running Rebels, as Kansas beat up on UNLV, 74-42. The Jayhawks could do no wrong, as they out-hustled the Running Rebels up and down the court. Kansas owned the boards, pulling down 11 more rebounds than UNLV in some dominant post play. The boys from Lawrence also dished out 17 assists and picked off 12 Rebel passes in the victory. (03.22.08 1300CST)
UCLA Escapes Aggies
The Bruins narrowly missed becoming the Tournament's first #1 seed to fall, as they escaped an upstart Texas A&M team, 57-49. The Aggies had the West's top ranked team up against the ropes for thirty-five minutes, up by as many as 12, but couldn't land the knock out blow. Late foul trouble had the Aggies reeling, as the Bruins' talented young center scored the team's final 9 points, part of a 12-2 run in the final 4 minutes, to clinch the victory and ensure UCLA a spot in the Virtual Sweet 16. (03.22.08 1300CST)
Georgetown Dominates Davidson
The Davidson Wildcats surprised everyone but themselves in their opening round upset victory over perennial tournament Cinderella Gonzaga. But the Wildcats' own fairytale attempt came up short on Saturday as the Georgetown Hoyas sent Davidson home, 80-44. The Big East's regular season conference champs stayed true to their defensive reputation, holding the Wildcats to just 34% shooting from the floor, while picking off 13 steals. Meanwhile, the Hoya offense played aggressive, heads-up basketball, dishing out 21 team assists and scoring 60% of their points in the paint. Georgetown is looking for a return trip to the Virtual Final Four, as they move on to the Sweet 16. (03.22.08 1300CST)
Tarheels Trounce Mountaineers
The East Regional's 16/1 match-up featured a team picked by many to win it all, The North Carolina Tarheels. The Tournament's overall number 1 seed had little trouble advancing to the round of 32, as they beat Mount St. Mary's 71-35. The Tarheels were led by their big men, who controlled the painted area and played above the rim for most of the day. They out-rebounded and out-muscled the Mountaineers, winning the rebounding battle by 13. UNC proved they were up to the task on the defensive end as well, blocking half a dozen Mount St Mary's shots and forcing 10 turnovers.
Panthers Pound Oral Roberts
The Pitt Panthers easily dismissed the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles in the Virtual Tournament's first round, 66-56. Strong post play from Pitt's big men set the tone early, and a steady barrage of threes stretched the Panthers' lead to 16 at the half. The Golden Eagles couldn't turn it around in the second, and managed just 37% shooting from the floor as the Pitt defense forced unbalanced shots all day. Making its seventh consecutive tourney appearance, Pittsburgh will look to continue their streak against Michigan State this weekend and a berth in the Sweet 16. (03.20.08 2030CST)
Rebels Shut Down Kent State
The real world once again mirrored the Virtual Tournament as the UNLV Runnin' Rebels eliminated the Mid-American Conference champs, 64-56. Neither team played particularly well in this Midwest Region 8-9 match-up, but the Runnin' Rebels were able to escape with the victory thanks to timely Kent State turnovers, and some lucky baskets in the closing moments. UNLV moves on to face the number one seed Kansas Jayhawks in the round of 32. (03.20.08 2030CST)
Zags Move On
Everyone's favorite Cinderella team opened the NCAA Tournament with a bang, as the Gonzaga Bulldogs crushed the Davidson Wildcats 61-40. Gonzaga's fast-paced offense proved too much for Davidson, as the Bulldogs struggled to keep pace with the run-and-gun attack. Showing no mercy, the Zag's opened the game with a 33-10 first half run, dominating the paint on both ends of the court. With the game well in hand, Gonzaga was able to rest many of their starters in the second half, and start preparing for their second round showdown against the Georgetown-UMBC victor. (03.20.08 2030CST)
Clemson Beats Villanova
The Villanova Wildcats had upset on their minds in the Midwest's 5-12 match-up, but the Clemson Tigers proved too strong as they beat the Cats 68-63. After finishing second in this year's ACC tournament, the Tigers came out with tons of energy, grabbing 23 rebounds and forcing 10 Wildcat turnovers. Villanova was able to keep pace early on, using lights-out 3-point shooting to stay in the game. But the Tigers would not be denied, as they hit clutch free-throws down the stretch to earn a spot in the second round. (03.20.08 2030CST)
Arkansas Upends Indiana
Two former National Champions met in the East's 8 vs 9 game, as the Arkansas Razorbacks defeated the Indiana Hoosiers 62-49. Arkansas used an aggressive full-court press to force 9 turnovers, leading to a slew of fast break dunks. Unselfish play from the Razorback guards helped pace the '94 Champs, as they finished with 15 assists and 20 boards. Indiana struggled from start to finish, shooting a dismal 40% from the field and turning the ball over 13 times. The Razorbacks, meanwhile, refused to let their season come to an end, as they moved into the next round. (03.19.08 2130CST)
Bears Bounce Purdue
The Baylor Bears narrowly defeated the Purdue Boilermakers in the opening round of the West regional, pulling off a shocking 69-66 upset. The Bears used tenacious defense and lethal three-point shooting to put the game away, as they escaped with the upset win over the 6th seeded Boilermakers. Baylor's guards played efficient basketball throughout, dishing out 16 assists and grabbing 10 steals. Purdue put up a valiant effort against the boys in green, but critical turnovers down the stretch doomed the Boilermakers and ensured Baylor a spot in the second round. (03.19.08 2130CST)
Oregon Ousts Mississippi State
The NCAA tournament is known for its exciting and fast paced play, and the South's 8-9 matchup didn't disappoint. The Oregon Ducks escaped with a narrow victory over Mississippi State, upsetting the 8th seeded Bulldogs. The Ducks played nearly error free all game and took advantage of open opportunities, connecting on 56% of their field goals and turning the ball over only 6 times. Despite winning the rebounding battle, the Bulldogs couldn't seem to figure out the aggressive Oregon defense, turning the ball over 11 times and helping the Ducks punch their ticket to the round of 32. (03.19.08 2100CST)
Vols Roll
The Tennessee Volunteers, the East's number two seed, made the American University Eagles' first trip to the tournament a brief one, defeating the Patriot League champs 63 - 42. The Vols' steady onslaught of finesse shooting and rim-rocking dunks had them ahead by 15 at the break, quelling any thoughts of an Eagles upset bid. The Tennessee attack shifted to defense in the second half, forcing 10 American turnovers while keeping their opponents under 40% shooting from the floor. The SEC regular season champs will look to move on to the round of 16 with another victory on Sunday. (03.19.08 2100CST)
Rock Chalk Jayhawk
A perennial favorite in the Virtual Tournament, the Kansas Jayhawks lived up to their #1 billing, routing Portland State, 92-49. The experienced Big 12 co-champs and their talented roster kept the Vikings guessing via a balanced attack that had KU out in front by 30 at the half. A strong presence on the boards, and a flurry of steals throughout the contest kept Kansas in control. The Jayhawks will look to continue their quest for a first Virtual Championship as they move on to round two. (03.19.08 2100CST)
Dogs' Streak Continues
Playing in their first NCAA tournament since 2002, the Georgia Bulldogs continued their miracle run, upsetting #3 Xavier 61-56. Georgia had to win 4 games in 4 days just to get to the big dance, and now the 14th seeded Bulldogs will be moving on to the 2nd round of the Virtual Tournament's West Regional. The SEC champs started quick and never looked back, using a tough defensive effort to maintain their lead. Xavier refused to go down easy, cutting the margin to just 33-31 at the half. But that's the closest the Musketeers would get, as Georgia used clutch three point shooting down the stretch to put the Musketeers away and secure their upset victory. (03.18.08 2030CST)
Blue Devils Best Belmont
After a disappointing finish in the ACC Tournament, the Duke Blue Devils used a hot start to defeat Belmont in their opening round game, 77-52. Belmont, the Atlantic Sun Conference Champions, dug themselves a 23 point first-half hole, and never recovered. Duke's offense was paced by their 3-point shooters, who connected on 45% of their long range opportunities. An aggressive Blue Devils defense finished the game with 9 steals, never allowing the Belmont offense to get comfortable. (03.18.08 1900CST)
Memphis Mauls Mavericks
The 31-win Conference USA champs began their quest for a first Virtual Final 4 berth by doubling-up Texas-Arlington 84-42. The Tigers' guard combo kept the Mavericks off-balance from the tip, running the floor for easy baskets and dishing inside for strong finishes from the post; while their quick hands swiped 13 steals. Memphis' big men out-hustled Texas-Arlington on the glass, dominating both the offensive and defensive sides of the court, pulling down 28 boards. The South's number 1 seed is on their way to round two of the virtual tournament. (03.18.08 1900CST)
Arizona Shocks the Mountaineers
The Pac-10 bested the Big East in the West's 7-10 match up, as the Arizona Wildcats defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers, 63-45. Arizona seemed to thrive in the underdog role, as just about every shot the Wildcats took found the bottom of the basket. The Cats played consistent throughout, shooting a high percentage from both the field and from deep. An unselfish brand of basketball will keep Arizona dancing, as they dished out 16 assists and out-rebounded the Mountaineers by 3. (03.18.08 1900CST)
Butler Cruises Past South Alabama
The Butler Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the Virtual Tournament for the second straight year, beating the South Alabama Jaguars 78-54. With the momentum gone, South Alabama just couldn't keep pace with the hot-shooting Bulldogs, connecting on just 40% of their shots from the field. Butler, meanwhile, couldn't miss, nailing 7 three-pointers in the second half, and cruising to the second round of the East bracket. (03.18.08 1900CST)
Michigan State avoids 5th Seed Curse
Nearly every year, a #12 seed upsets a #5 seed in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Michigan State Spartans made sure they wouldn't be a part of this year's notorious 5-12 upset, as they beat the Temple Owls 78-52. The Spartans played tenacious D throughout, picking off 10 Temple passes and converting them into easy fast break points; while playing unselfish basketball all game, dishing out 17 assists as a team. In the paint, it was all Michigan State, as the boys from East Lansing out-rebounded Temple by 11, and avoided playing a part in the Owls' Cinderella attempt. (03.18.08 1900CST)
Bruins Cruise Into Round 2
UCLA came into the tournament as the number one seed and showed why they deserved it, easily handling Mississippi Valley State in the first round.
The Delta Devils had upset on their minds, but the Bruins' dynamic guard tandem, coupled with the big man in the middle, squashed those dreams early on. UCLA's young center overpowered and outplayed his opponents, taking feeds from the key and hammering points in the paint all day long. Key steals down the stretch cemented the Bruins' victory and sent them on to the virtual tournament`s second round. (03.18.08 1400CST)
Hoyas Hound UMBC
The Georgetown Hoyas have one of the most talented front courts in the nation, and their post players put on a show against #15 UMBC, defeating the American East Champions 71-55. The Retrievers came out aggressively, and weren't intimidated by the Midwest's #2 seed, as they trailed Georgetown by only 4 at the midway point - but the Hoyas came out of halftime blazing, shooting over 70% from the field. Georgetown`s big men dominated the paint, overwhelming UMBC with their physical post play. The Hoyas out-rebounded their opponents by double digits, and didn't allow any easy buckets, blocking 14 Retriever shots. UMBC never recovered from the Hoyas run; as Georgetown was able to take the Retrievers out of their comfort zone, and beat the #15 seed in dominate fashion. (03.18.08 0900CST)
Wildcats Upset Marquette
On Selection Sunday, The University of Kentucky men's basketball team didn't know whether they would be playing in this year's NCAA tournament or watching it from home. Now, they've provided the virtual tournament with its first upset, beating Marquette 93-72. The 7-time National Champions began their quest for the 2008 trophy with a bang, as the 11th seeded Wildcats beat the 6th seeded Golden Eagles in the South's opening round. One of the last teams invited to the Dance, Kentucky used solid guard play to pull the upset, shooting a high percentage from beyond the arc and from the free-throw line. The one-time bubble team led the entire game, and began their quest for their 8th National Championship, and first Virtual Championship. (03.18.08 0030 CST)
